Jody Stevens took her grandmother’s Hummingbird Cake recipe and gave it a more organic, modern spin with a few new infusions (whole-wheat flour and ground flax seed) and the substitution of agave nectar for sugar. Not exactly the pantry staples of a Southern lady.

“She would roll over in her grave if she knew I was using agave,” Stevens said.
