Not many years ago, we would have been hard-pressed to come up with a list of 50 women in influential positions in the Houston food and beverage industry, much less 100. Today we have an embarrassment of worthy candidates.
And although the selection process was very difficult – we struggled and argued for days about this who’s-who list of women in the Houston restaurant world – we are thrilled that there are so many women today who merit consideration.
We have included women who have broken barriers and “glass ceilings.” Here you will find business owners, like Tracy Vaught, a geologist-turned-restaurateur who has owned restaurants since the early 1980s, and iconic chefs such as Monica Pope of Sparrow Bar + Cookshop, who has long been a leader in the local and sustainable foods movement. But we also have several newcomers whose names you might not yet know: Brandi Key who successfully shepherded Coppa Ristorante Italiano into existence as a highly regarded Italian eatery; Monica Glenn, who crafts exquisite and fascinating desserts at Uchi; and Shiva Patel, who serves up British-style pub food at Queen Vic Pub & Kitchen.
Ladies have made as big of an impact on beverages as they have on food. Our list includes women making strides in wine distribution as well as lady bartenders who are making the journey from drink-shaker to business owner.
From the old to the young, from those who have been in Houston their entire lives to those who just moved here last year and already are making their mark … for your consideration, we present (in alphabetical order) 100 Women: Who’s Who in Houston’s Food and Beverage World.
